Brief Bio
Pedro Coelho received the Electrical Engineer Diploma in telecommunications area from PUC-Rio, in 1976, the MSc degree from PUC-Rio (CETUC) in Electrical Engineering, telecommunications systems area, in 1979 and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Birmingham University, Birmingham, UK, in 1983. Currently, he is Full Professor in the Telecommunications and Electronics Department at State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). His previous academic positions include undergraduate and graduate lecturing in PUC-Rio, IME (Military Institute of Engineering in Rio) UFMA (Federal University of Maranhão State) and UBI (Beira Interior University in Portugal). He acted as consultant in engineering and research projects at EMBRATEL (Brazilian Telecommunications Enterprise) and PUC-CETUC-Rio (Catholic University – Center of Telecommunications Studies). He worked for INTELSAT in the Intelsat VI Program Office from 1985 to 1987 in El Segundo, California, USA and also participated in the Portuguese Universities Consortium for the POSAT I Satellite. His research interests are in Communication systems, application of intelligent systems including neural networks in engineering and communications. He has participated in several International Conferences including IEEE sponsored symposia in telecommunications and neural networks area presenting papers. He has been an IEEE member since 1984, and IEEE Senior Member since 2004.


The usage of artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle engineering problems has been one of the most exciting research topics in recent years in the large field of engineering particularly industrial applications such as wireless networks industrial plants. Typical AI techniques include artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms, swarm intelligence, fuzzy logic, expert systems, machine learning etc. AI has been successfully employed in solving real-world engineering problems such as routing in wireless networks, calibration in manufacturing/measuring system, signal processing,pattern identification, process optimization and so on. The goal of this workshop is to motivate high-quality research contributions that focus on real-world applications of AI in a variety of engineering fields. Theoretical contributions aiming aspects concerning a particular engineering are also encouraged.
