Since 1988 the Tablao de Carmen has kept alive the tradition of the very best flamenco. The Tablao de Carmen pays homage to the great flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya, born in 1915 in the Somorrostro, the gypsy neighbourhood which existed in what today is the Vila Olímpica. Carmen Amaya made her debut in 1929 before King Alfonso XIII in the grounds which are now occupied by the Tablao de Carmen, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Poble Espanyol de Montjuïc in the year of the International Exhibition in Barcelona.

The artistic development of the Tablao de Carmen has been impeccable from the start. Living up to the reputation of our namesake, we are proud to be able to say that we owe our prestige principally to the coherence and quality of our programme. This programme has always been based on maintaining the purest tradition and highest standards, above fashions, prejudices or commercial interests.

The show offered by the Tablao de Carmen is typical of a flamenco tablao; in other words there is neither formal choreography nor synchronized organization. In the show several of the most important flamenco styles or forms are presented so that experts as well as those who are not so knowledgeable can discover the richness and variety of this art in all its facets: music, dance and song. The artists demonstrate their art individually, but when each soloist interprets his or her number, the rest follow the meter, marking the rhythm, accompanying and reinforcing it, allowing improvisation by the artists. In the same way communication with the audience plays an important role and means that two shows are never the same.

The Poble Espanyol was built in 1929 for the International Exhibition of Barcelona. The site was given this name as it was conceived to provide a taster of the richness and variety of Spanish architecture, and within its walls are replicas of the most representative buildings of all regions of Spain. By visiting Poble Espanyol it is possible to get an idea of the most important aspects of Spanish history and culture.

The Poble Espanyol is also a space designed for leisure and entertainment, and there are bars and restaurants for all tastes at all times of day and night. The combination of these elements - culture, tradition and leisure – means that Poble Espanyol has become one of the places in Barcelona that is most visited by tourists. The Tablao de Carmen is situated in the Andalusian neighbourhood in a typically Andalusian street. Both the outdoor atmosphere and the interior decoration, with their careful attention to detail, allow visitors to become immersed in the atmosphere of the most genuine flamenco.

The decoration is in authentic Andalusian style: the floor in whitish hues like the earth of the South of Spain; chairs, railings and columns in reddish hues, the classic colour of Spanish decoration, and many white lanterns at different levels, which evoke the atmosphere of the Seville Fair.
